For many people, home design and decoration just doesn’t fit into the family budget right now, with other needs taking priority. Projects, plans and expenditures may have to be put on the back burner in place of other, more pressing budget needs. But stepping into your Living Room or Great Room on a daily basis is a constant reminder of some sorely needed freshening up. Don’t despair! You can take some simple steps with your room decor to change the overall design and give a fresh perspective to the area, thus bringing a smile to your face. And there isn’t a price tag that can be put on that!

We are going to work with the thought that you will use what you have and not purchase anything new. There are literally no expenses other than some thoughtful planning and elbow grease.

Before you take any action, go into the your Living Area and assess the furniture and accessories that currently reside there. Start with the room’s largest pieces and make a list of those that are critical to the function of the room, then work your way down to the smallest items. For example, your sofa, if you have one, probably needs to remain in this room, assuming you use this area for seating. Be selective as you make this list and think about the function of each piece before adding it to the list.

As your list is created you are most likely going to have some pieces that are not going to find their way on to your list, and those are the pieces that are expendable to the function of this room. Most people are going to find that they have a chair, end table/coffee table, accent piece, rocker, etc that is not critical to the area and may in fact be taking up good space. You may ultimately keep these items in the room, but for now they are not on your list of ‘keepers’.

Once you are satisfied with the pieces on your list, take everything out of the room that is NOT found on it, including accessories. Physically remove them from the room. The room should now have just the pieces that are necessary to the room’s function.

Now comes the fun and creative part of this home decor project, and that is to rework your pieces and arrange them in a new and different way to bring that fresh perspective into play. Many times, furniture is placed in a room against the walls and stays in the same place for years (for some, many years!).

Pretend that your room has a hexagon (six sided) shape around the perimeter of the area, so instead of the standard four walls there are six, smaller ‘walls’ or lines on the floor. Take the windows, door openings and other pieces like TVs into consideration, and place your largest upholstered pieces on the hexagon ‘lines’.

What you have just done is placed your furniture at some angles and pulled it away from the straight walls, which can bring a totally different design look to a room, and give a different perspective to those seated in the room. For the vast majority of folks, you have also placed the pieces in a different location than they were – you have found a new and unique furniture arrangement! You have also taken one, two or maybe more, pieces from the area to give it a more open and spacious look.

Once you are satisfied with the arrangement of the larger pieces, start bringing in the smaller pieces and accessories that were on your list, with the goal of putting each piece in a different location than in the past. Sometimes the function and size of the piece make it impossible to move, and that’s okay. But your first plan of action is to find a new home for each piece. Do the same with your accessories, and when you are finished, your room will have a new and fresh look! Have you spent any money? Not one penny, and that is the best kind of home decoration.

Your Living Room has been thoughtfully rearranged and your home decor and design project is complete. For the time being, until your budget can accommodate your home decorating goals. Enjoy your new surroundings!

Starting my own pet care business?

I'm hoping to start my own business offering such services as pet walking, day care while at work, and constant care while on vacation. I'm certified in pet first aid through Petco; I have experience rescuing and rehabilitating abused and neglected farm animals. I'm also volunteering at our local humane society this summer. To succeed in the lawn care business you need to have the right commercial equipment. Having the right equipment makes you more professional and productive.

While you can start out in lawn care with a basic push mower that you can cart around in a station wagon or with a small trailer, it is the operators with small trucks and commercial mowers that distinguish themselves as the ‘six figure’ operators.

This article looks at some of the basic equipment that you will need to be successful cutting grass for a living.

Your largest purchase when it comes to equipment will be your vehicle. Look at the dimensions and weight of some of the commercial mowers that you are interested in and make sure that you have a truck or van and trailer that can take the load securely as well as making packing and unpacking convenient. Once you have decided what equipment you will purchase you should consider having racks installed into the vehicle for safely storing and locking the equipment.

In terms of lawn mowers, the basic ‘walk behind’ lawn mower is an industry standard and comes in many varieties ranging from the typical consumer lawn mowers up to some quite advanced commercial types. These mowers are practical, maneuverable and good for most residential jobs. Some commercial ‘walk behind’ mowers are able to tow a small platform called a Velke which allows the operator to stand on a small platform and be slowly pulled along by the mower, thus saving on energy.

For more serious lawn care business operators ‘Ride on’ mowers are the next logical step up. While not quite as flexible as ‘walk behind’ mowers in that they are not suited to hilly terrain and smaller areas these mowers generally make the operator much more productive on an average lawn surface. ZTR (Zero Turn Radius) mowers are the best when it comes to ‘ride on’ mowers due to their power, features and maneuverability (they can turn on a dime).

For a one man operator, owning a combination of a ‘walk behind’ mower and a ‘ride on’ mower is best for maximizing productivity on all lawn shapes and contours.

Other required lawn care equipment includes trimmers and edgers, necessary for cutting grass in places that the lawn mower cannot reach such as along concrete driveway edges and around letterboxes. Blowers are also useful for removing grass clippings and leaves from paths, driveways and pavements to leave a customers property looking neat and tidy.

Lastly, you should make sure that you have the appropriate safety equipment including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves and work boots with a steel cap in the toes.

While not all of this is essential for a new operator starting out in the grass cutting business you should aim to have a commercial lawn mower or ‘ride on’ mower sometime within your first year of business so that you are productive and distinguish yourself as a professional, giving you the best chance of making ‘six figures’ in the lawn care business.

8 Ways On How Not To Screw A Roof Installation

There are many ways to screw up a roof installation, but only one way to do it right. I will show you most of the common mistakes and how to avoid them. Read these carefully and watch out for that construction team. If by any chance you are going for the DYI approach you will have to watch steps with even more attention.

1) The first step and one of the most overlooked one is to only build in the right conditions. Roofing under 35 degrees Fahrenheit should never be attempted. This is mostly due to security reasons. You need a dry working area otherwise it can get very slippery. Of course I don’t expect anyone to carry a thermometer around, you should always consider common sense. Look at the roof before going on top of it. If it looks moist stay away from it. If you find this to be harsh, try doing something else in the meantime, bring your roofing supplies closer, analyze what has been done so far, do some measurements, resize the materials if needed. Only a fraction from a roof installation is actually done on the roof.

2) Avoid walking on an installed roof. This is critical when it comes to tile or slate roofs. Ant true professional will avoid this at almost any cost and will always have an escape route which doesn’t affect the already installed portions of roof. This is a very good way to detect inexperienced roof contractors. True professionals respect their work. Even with metallic sheet roofs, this should be avoided, because although they are very unlikely to break, they can bend and can remain that way.

3) Use a roof consultant. The fee you will pay will probably be one of the best investments you ever made. There are many hidden dangers that can affect the quality of roofing. Getting your facts and priorities has proven time and time again an invaluable factor. Making an informed choice and getting a glimpse in what your future roof should look like is sometimes the best choice available and can save you the cost of many mistakes.

4) Get the flashing right. Flashing is a critical part in regards to a roof’s longevity. A poorly made job can ruin an entire roof. This is not the most difficult task at hand, but it is very important to get it right. First make sure you get the right supplies as the flashing metal must come in an appropriate size. Typically there are two ways of acquiring flashing overlapping and soldering. Soldering is the most difficult one to properly get it right. It is usually used for chimneys and low slopes. Get those corners right and make sure that no water can leak from the chimney. If by any chance a contractor puts a strong emphasis on the underlayment you should have all the alarm bells ringing. A good roof may actually require no underlayment at all. It is a sign that the builder is not very confident in its own work and thus neither should you. So please make sure that the overlapping is positive and that soldering jobs are done with the thermal contraction and expansion in mind. This also means that you should always do your flashing consistently, meaning that you should use the same metal on all the roof. Stainless steel is I think the best choice that you have available as it is both durable and flexible, if on the other hand you intend to make a DYI job, aluminium might be the right choice as it is very to bend, a warning though aluminium flashing won’t last very long.

5) Get the right materials. And by this I mean that all the materials you buy should have just about the same longevity. If you are building a slate roof designed to last 200 years, it is not very wise to use plywood which will last 20 years. If on the other hand you intention to build a roof with small durability as a temporary solution, plywood will do just fine. Nails are also very important. They can be easily overlooked and are seen by the contractors as a mean to cut costs. The problem is that you will get what you pay for. Go the extra mile and buy some decent nails or at least make sure that the contractor does. Remind them gently and they will likely get them right.

6) Get the right tools. I know that this sounds obvious, but I have seen countless situations when the construction of a roof was greatly delayed simply because a crowbar could not be found anywhere around. Before you actually start building make sure that you have the proper tools.

7) When dealing with contractors make sure that everything is specified in the contract. The type of material used down to every single detail, the time required and the payment options. Look carefully before you sign anything. You won’t need the help of a lawyer, most likely you will need the help of someone who actually knows something about roofing. This is extremely important as one you sign that contract you engage yourself in a very long and possible hard ride. Be careful and read everything.

Stay away from inexperienced contractors. This is critical. Before you actually choose a contractor ask for a portfolio and some proof of their qualification, friends can be priceless as their advice based on experience can help you to quickly locate a good contractor.

How do I start my Lawn Mowing business?

Hey there, I'm in the Los Angeles area. I am 21, and I would like to start my own business. I have chosen the landscaping/Lawn mowing business, I have no experience, I do like lawns, but i don't have a strong passion for them. I chose this business to generate cash flow.

Today is my first day of research, I will take any & all advice I can get, it can be as little as a paragraph Or even 5 or 6 pages long, i will appreciate it, and soak it all up, I really need a lot of answers to questions I don't even have yet.

Right off the top of my head, here are a few research questions that I have. You can skip this and give me what ever advice you have, but also I will need these answers some how. Thank you

Questions:

1.What are the requirements by law, for me to do business as a lawn mower/or landscaper. Exactly what licenses, and paper work will I need to fill out etc. And any other requirement, to do this type of business that I will need.

2.How do I legally hire employees? I want my guys to be “Independent contractors.” so they are responsible for everything they do. If they get hurt on the job etc. (also, will being an independent contractor protect me if they get hurt on the job?) I mainly want this, so they can use their own truck. This way they won't be careless with my truck. I want it so they use their own truck & their are responsible for what happens.

3.What equiptment will I need? About how much will it cost for everything? New/Used

4.How much should my guys get paid (Los angeles area?) And is it ok to find guys with no experience & train them? I mean is the work that hard?

5.What do most lawn Mowing companies/Landscapers even do? We don't have one so I wouldn't know. I know they cut the grass & blow the leaves, but i'm sure there is more to it. What is most common, and does it take extensive training?

6.In total, how much do you estimate it would cost me to get started? Im in Los angeles area, and imagine i had 1 truck w/ 2-3 guys, and business is pretty good. Also, how much did it cost for you to get started?

7.This question is like part 2 to my first question, What all do I need to be legitimate? Insurance? would I need a commercial property?

8.And how hard is it to keep track of my taxes & stuff? & do we get charged alot of tax in this business?

I am sure most of my questions are anoying, but they are the fresh ones off the top of my head, this is my first day of research. I really do appreciate everything you can do for me, please educate me as much as you can. It will not go to waste, & carma does exist:)
